"communication" is the most important thing in the whole life. We need to communicate well to understand each other. Especially in hospitality industry, every customer is the biggest product. So people in the industry should be professional of communication.
For me, communication is really important. Especially I came from Japan, and English is my second language. At the beginning, I was always struggling because I could not say what I wanted to say .I also was not able to understand what people were saying because I felt their speaking pace was too fast for me. However, I tried so hard to communicate with English speakers even if I could not speak very well because I believed that they understand if I tried. I used to use many gestures to communicate with everybody.
I have had the guests who are deaf. The whole people at the table were deaf so it was a little hard to figure out what the best way to communicate with them is. Some people at the table were able to hear me if I speak loudly, but it does not sound good for any other customers. So I tried to point out the menu when I took their order without saying anything. However, my co-worker told me that was not proper way to communicate with them because it seemed like I gave up communicating with them. My co-worker communicated with them with pointing out the menu and talking with clear mouth moving (they might understand by moving of the mouth) to them even if they cannot hear at all. I learned the important thing from this experience. Communication is not only by verbal way but also by behavioral and eye contacts. It is really important to communicate with people with proper behavior and eye contacts. Especially for the person who has difficulty for hearing.
"Smiling is the universal language". I like this quote. I got this from the hospitality marketing class and I strongly agree with this. Even if we cannot understand by language, we can share how we feel by facial expressions. In my opinion, communication with smile face has so much power. People who are in hospitality industry much not forget smiling all the time. Smile makes people smile. :)
